Literature Text

The next day, we left the cave as we found it and continued our journey.

I'd have liked to have rested a bit longer, definitely to train more, but Thorin insisted that we move on.

I rode next to Bilbo.

"I can't believe you can handle a sword as well as you did." he smiled, still proud.

I shrugged. "I can't either, to be honest. I'm not sure what came over me. All of a sudden, for a split second, I felt stronger. Like I could take on anything."

I heard a laugh, and looked behind me, only to see Bofur smiling wide as he laughed.

"I can almost promise you that Thorin wasn't putting his all into it. I'm sure he didn't want to hurt a lass like you."

I rolled my eyes, and looked forward. Was he right? Suddenly, I didn't feel strong anymore.

Then, I began to feel like I needed to prove myself to him.

I yelled at Fili, who was near the front of the line, to ride next to me.

I explained my plan to keep training, and as I got better, fight the next toughest dwarf. Then, when I fought Thorin again, he wouldn't need to go easy on me.

Fili thought it was a good idea, and agreed to help me.

I would beat Thorin Oakenshield.

- - -

We rode until dark, and set up camp under the cover of the trees.

Fili and I began to train as before, but he used an actual sword instead of a stick.

I remembered what Thorin had told me when fighting. Keep moving and keep breathing.

At first, I had a little trouble with the breathing part, but being competitive got the best of me.

We sparred many times, knocking each other down equally,
Blades clashing against each other was the only sound heard in the forest.

Fili came at me, baring his sword.

I waited until the last second, and when he swung, I dodged him, and jumped to the side, ending up behind him. I felt overcome with power again. And speed.

As his sword came down, I put my sword near his throat.

I saw him smile as he dropped his weapon.

"Alright, you win." he lifted his hands in surrender.

We decided that I was to fight Kili next.

This fight went much like the one with his brother did, but he was quicker.

Finally I landed him on his back smiling.

"Button, you are definitely fit to handle that sword if you can take me down." he winked and laughed as I helped him to his feet.

He wrapped me in a tight hug after he stood. I laughed, not entirely sure how I felt about this.

My stomach growled then.

"Hungry are we?" he looked down at me, grinning.

Bombur yelled to us that food was ready.

I backed away from Kili, smiled, and we both walked back to camp.

- - -

Everyone was seated around a nice warm fire.

Fili and Kili were telling about how much I had improved with training.

"I think it's about time the lass and I had a good brawl." Dwalin smiled at me across the fire. I took in his strength and the fact that he has seen many battles, and although I would greatly fight him eventually, I would need a lot more practice.

Everyone laughed at my face as I looked at Dwalin. I smiled. He knew I wasn't ready. Yet.

I looked down at my stew as I finished my portion. How I missed food from the Shire.

But, this would have to do.

As I handed Bofur my bowl, I happened to glance at Thorin. He had finished a while before me, and was siting on the other side of the fire, next to Dwalin.

They were having a discussion, but Thorin didn't seem very interested. He would look at me every now and then.
When I met his eyes, he looked down, acting as though he never looked my way in the first place.

I huffed and stood up. Bilbo and some of the dwarves had gone to sleep. That sounded great after today.
I was very sore.

I sighed as I laid down. Tomorrow would feel the same, if not worse.
