Literature Text

The next day, we were on the move again.

Thorin seemed to be in more of a bad mood than usual.

I wondered if it was because of Kili and I last night..

"Of course not." I thought to myself. Why would he be jealous..

We continued riding our ponies over green hills that were beautiful. I never would have thought I would be here. Not in a lifetime.

Fili rode up next to me.

"So, Scarlet, do you have any training in fighting?"

I shook my head. "We never had to in the Shire."

He put his hand on his chin. "Well, I think it may be time for you to learn."

"I don't have anything to train with.."

He reached in a sheath attached to his saddle and pulled out a thin sword. Thin or not, it looked like it could really do some damage.
He untied the sheath and handed it to me.
He began looking at the sword.

"I trained with this sword before the journey. It's quite light, so it should e perfect for you. Next time we stop for a rest, I'll show you how to use it." He put it in its sheath and tie it to my saddle.

This all began to feel real, now that I had my own weapon.

- - -

My training came quicker than I thought. Night had come upon us.

Thorin rode ahead a bit and had found a deserted cave.

That would be where we rested for the night.

Ori and Nori started a small fire and everyone laid out there beds for the night.

After I got set up, Fili walked up to me.

"This'd be a good a time as any to train."

I nodded and grabbed the sheath and followed him out of the cave.

"Not too far!" Balin yelled from inside.

- - -

Fili had knocked me I the ground for a third time. I was not getting the hang of this fighting thing at all.

He gave me a hand and helped me up, laughing as he did it. I glared at my teacher, but got back into position.

"Alright, now this time hold your ground. You don't want to let anyone get past you."

He came at me again, swinging. He had found a rather large stick to use as a "sword".

I held my breath and held up my sword, trying to block his hits. The stick smacked against the sword many times, but with one final push, I was on the ground again.

I sighed. "I just can't get this!"

"It takes a lot of practice. You'll get it." Fili helped me up once more. When I was standing, I saw Thorin watching us.

I blushed; surely he had seen me fall.

He began walking towards us.

"Step aside Fili."

His nephew listened and backed up a few feet.

"Training with a mere stick will do nothing. You fight with real blades; train with them."

He pulled out his sword and I gulped.

Oh no..

"Square your legs. Do not lock your knees, and keep moving. Don't stay in one spot." He lifted his sword.

"Also, make sure to keep breathing."

He came at me. I froze.

"Move Scarlet! Don't just stand there!" Fili yelled from the sidelines.

I began stepping backwards. Thorin started slashing at me.
I threw up my sword and barely blocked a few of his blows.

I moved quickly to the right, which caught him off guard. But not enough.
He swung to the right, again hitting my blade.

I could see the fire in his eyes. I could also see him silently urging me on.

An overwhelming feeling came over me.

I began to move faster. I almost glided on the ground. I began to dodge most of his swings.

Many of the company had come down from the cave to watch.

Thorin kept swinging while Kili and Fili cheered me on.

The dwarf king gave a hearty swing. I somehow got behind him and wrapped my arms around his neck. My blade was inches from his throat.

Thorin dropped his sword.

"The elf in her is coming out." Gandalf smiled at me.

Thorin's hair began tickling my nose, and I pulled away.
He turned to look at me.

The look on his face was not one I had seen him wear before.

He was impressed.

He put both hands on my shoulders, and gave me a warm smile.

He didn't have to say anything for me to know what he was thinking.

He turned and picked up his blade and walked back to the cave as Kili and Fili ran up to me. They picked me up and began cheering.

"You did great Button!"

"Aye! That was amazing!"

Bofur spoke, "I for one, have never seen a hobbit move that fast."

Bilbo huffed, but continued smiling at me. My cousin was proud of me as well.

While Kili and Fili carried me back up to the cave, I felt different.

I felt stronger. Faster.

Ok this is my favorite installment so far, I love how you brought Thorin into the scene, having him offer his training: the bit about the using real blades literally made my stomach flip-flop, I can't wait to read more
